W.Va. organizations voice disapproval of SCOTUS abortion ruling

Friday’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade ended constitutional protections for abortions that had stood for nearly half a century.

Several West Virginia organizations expressed their disapproval and called on state leaders to hold a special session to consider repealing an 1882 state code that criminalizes abortion and delineates a prison sentence of up to 10 years for anyone involved in the procedure.

West Virginia is one of 26 states predicted to ban abortions. Gov. Jim Justice said he will ‘not hesitate to call a special session’ after consultation with his legal team and legislators. Other state leaders made their stances known shortly after the decision was made.”
